Neuromuscular  Therapy  &  More...

Neuromuscular Therapy is an advanced form of Massage Therapy which effectively handles Knee & Leg pain, Low Back & Hip pain, Neck & Shoulder pain, Arm & Wrist pain.

with Joel Safran... a Certified NeuroMuscular Therapist
who was a member of the St. John Seminar teaching staff.

An effective integrative manual therapy approach
which is based on understanding and treating
          relationships withing our body systems.

Neuromuscular Therapy is a specific treatment approach for the treatment of pain & dysfunction.

By "dysfunction", we mean:
reduced 'range of motion'  --   loss of strength, agility and dexterity  --
the development of neurological disorders and sensations  --
impaired physiological functioning of various body systems  --  and so on.

Neuromuscular Therapy helps both muscles and organs to function more properly

Neuromuscular Therapy examines & treats
7 physiological factors contributing to Pain & Dysfunction.

Ischemia...
Restricted blood flow starves tissues of nutrients and oxygen... creating weakness.  There is also restriction to the elimination of cellular waste materials... creating more weakness, pain and hyper-sensitivity.

Trigger Points...
These are areas of heightened neurological activity in muscle tissue.  They often also refer pain & dysfunction to other parts of the body.

Nerve Compression...
Pinching of a segment of a nerve between two bones creates weakness and pain.  Compression of this type is generally due to a structural distortion.

Nerve Entrapment...
Pinching of a segment of a nerve that is within or in between 'soft tissue' structures... or between a bone and a soft tissue structure will also create weakness and pain.

Joint Injuries...
When small muscles and ligaments are damaged... such as in "whiplash" and "sudden impact" type injuries... the body tends to protect that injured area as best it can.  Pain, stiffness and impaired mobility results... which promotes further pain, stiffness and dysfunction.

Postural & Structural Distortion...
When the body is not anatomically correct, it is unbalanced and incapable of a graceful flow of movement.  This caused the body to be more injury prone.

BioMechanical Dysfunction...
When this unbalanced body moves, it does so with much greater effort... and with less effeciency.  It is more injury prone because of the created weakness and imbalance.  In time, other parts will develop... such as joint problems.  The body will wear down at an increased rate.

Other Factors, also have an effect on Chronic Conditions.
Improper nutrition, lack or improper stretching & exercise will have negative affects on our health.
How well we are able to manage our emotional well being, will also have an effect on our total well being.
When appropriate, issues such as these will be discussed with patients.

During a Typical Neuromuscular Therapy Session...
We will evaluate distortions in your body's present Structural Integration, and treat the specific tissues (muscle & fascia) that are contributing to pain & dysfunction.  It will be a very focused approach toward determining and treating the root cause of the contributing factors.  During the therapy session, communication between you and your Neuromuscular Massage Therapist will assist in following the neurological pathway... and in treating you and your tissues appropriately.  We work together to get as much accomplished as possible.  You are an important part of the processes.

Ignoring the negativity of this cycle encourages Neck & Shoulder pain, Memory & Behavioral concerns, Ringing in the Ears, Abdominal & Pelvic concerns, TMJ & Carpal Tunnel issues... and much more.

Untreated, Pain & Dysfunction generally becomes WORSE...
It will generally spiral... from pain & dysfunction... to more stress & tension... to more muscle tightness... to increased restriction of blood flow... which results in an increase in metabolic waste accumulation... which creates more pain & dysfunction.

This cycle is reversed, by treating the affected areas in a thorough and complete way...
Tissue sensitivity is reduced, and your ability to be more productive and enjoy life more fully is generally increased.  In the process, we are treating more than Neuromuscular Structures... we are treating all the soft tissues involved.  Our body is a highly integrated unit.  So, to be effective, we need to be aware of that and integrate our work with the rest of the body and its tissues as well.  Proper Structural Integration of you body is our goal.

The Nervous System is properly treated by integrating various techniques from Neuromuscular Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Myofascial techniques and Visceral and Organ manipulation.

The Nervous System  (for your information)...
The Nervous System participates in all disease processes that we know of.  By eliminating a Neuromuscular component of a disease process, we can have a profound affect on promoting health.  And we can often have a profound affect on the other tissues, other body systems... and our total Well Being.

The many parts of our "Nervous System"...

The Peripheral Nervous System...
These nervous tissues course into the body from the Spinal Cord (as shown by the yellow lines in this image).  There are "motor" nerves that cause us to move.  There are "sensory" nerves that cause us to feel and monitor body systems.  There are "autonomic" nerves that cause things to happen without our attention... like the chewing of food.  Other activities are carried out more automatically in an involuntary way such as the beating of the heart, the process of digestion or the functioning of an organ.

The Central Nervous System...
These nervous tissues consist of the Brain and Spinal Cord.  They consist of parts of the Brain... and Cranial Nerves that service the Head and Neck.  They further divide into Sympathetic ("fight or flight" responses") and Parasympathetic ( rest & repair responses).

All divisions are important when they are needed.  The goal of "good therapy" is to assist the body in utilizing that part of the nervous sytem that is needed in an appropiate and functional way... and toning down that part of the nervous system that is not contributing to the greater benefit of the patient... YOU.  This is the caliber of therapy you can expect from this practice.
