Comprehensive  Evaluation  &  Treatment  Plan...

After initial and ongoing evaluations, treatments will employ various manual medical techniques to encourage desired therapeutic goals...
such as:

NeuroMuscular  Therapy...
to normalize and lengthen soft tissues, as well as to reduce hyper-activity of nervous impuses.

MyoFascial  Techniques...
to reduce the compression and entrapment of various tissues and structures.

CranioSacral  Therapy... and
CranioSacral  Structural  Techniques...
Membranous techniques to normalize the Dural Tissues within the core of the CranioSacral System... and especially CranioSacral "Structural Techniques" in order to remove restrictions that inhibit proper and healthy bone & tissue movements within the CranioSacral System.

Osteopathic  Techniques...
to remove restrictions  affecting the proper movement of Vertebrae and Joints.  Principles of Osteopathy are an important part of this practice.  These techniques help remove restrictions that greatly, and often, contribute to a variety of Chronic Conditions... including TMJ  Disorders.

Because the TMJ is near the ear, it is related to ear ache, dizziness, movement disorder and tinnitus.

This goes way past what is considered to be Massage Therapy.
Patients consistently say that this is the most effective "manual
physical medicine" they have ever experienced from any doctor
                       or therapist of any kind.

Improve the Position & Function of the Jaw, Articular Disc and related tissues...

Pain, Apprehension, Jaw Fatigue, Clicking or Popping, Grinding and Clenching of Teeth, Headaches and so on... may be the result of improper position of the Jaw Bone (Mandible) and the Articular Disc within the TMJ  Capsule.  One of our main goals in therapy sessions, will be to correct the position of the Jaw and the related tissues.  To accomplish this, we will work with the External and Intra-Oral tissues and bones.  This enables the various structures to regain their proper position and function... NATURALLY.

Compression within the TMJ capsule leads to headache, jaw pain, grinding of teeth, stuffiness of ear.
If the disc does not maintain its position, a click - pop with jaw pain occurs often with headache.
Note the Joint Capsule in the Left image.  It is a special type of Synovial Joint.
It is protected by the Capsule's fibrous wrappings... and also by Ligaments
that protect the Joint from exceeding appropriate ranges of motion.

The image on the Right show what is inside of the TMJ  Capsule.  There are
two phases of "jaw opening".  Fig. 547 shows what happens in phase #1.
Fig. 548 show what happens in Phase #2.

Identify and Address the Root Causes of the TMJ  Dysfunction...

In addition to that, you can expect that we will begin locating and normalizing those abnormal tissues and bones that probably are the root cause of your TMJ  Disorder issues.  Root Causes most probably have been a debilitating and damaging part of your body for a long time... often from the time of birth and childhood.  Please visit the "Pediatric & Childhood Conditions" webPage on this webSite for more information.

Expect  Treatments  to  be
Thorough  &  Complete
Wholistic  &  Natural
...and  Goal  Oriented

Expect treatments to be focused on your own individual situations.  We are not all the same.  An initial strategy will be our starting point... and this strategy and treatment protocol will change as your body responds and changes.  Expect TMJ  Therapy treatments to be goal oriented toward relieving the imbalances and disorders.  Expect treatments to alter the root causes that most probably have greatly contributed to the disorders.  There will be communication between us.  You will understand the process... and enjoy learning more about your body.

The  TMJ  is  Simple...  yet  quite  Complex...

Restrictions of the 22 cranial bones can contribute to TMJ disorders, headache, ear and eye problems.
The Jaw Bone basically hangs from the Temporal Bones...

The TMJ (TemporoMandibular Joint) is rather a simple unit.  The Jaw Bone (Mandible) has only one attachment to each of the two Temporal Bones.

However, depending upon how imbalanced the two Temporal Bones may be in relation to one another, the Jaw Bone will reflect that imbalance by not being properly positioned.  Further more, the Temporal bones become imbalanced because of other structural imbalances & distortions further on down the line.  And this "wave" of distortion continues on down... most likely to the area of the Sacrum, Lumbar Spine and Pelvic Bones.  This "wave" of imbalanced distortion will therefore affect other bones and soft tissues.  It will negatively affect how the body functions physically and physiologically.

Therefore, if someone just treated the area of the TMJ, the treatment would not be dealing with the entire chain of events that most likely cause the TMJ disorder in the first place.  You see, it is actually quite simple... but very confusing and complex at the same time.

Craniosacral distortions contribute to scoliosis, sports injuries, and pain in the abdomen, leg, shoulder, neck.
A HealthCare Professional who is Experienced and "Wholistic"...

Because of the complexities of TMJ  Disorders... as well as other Chronic Conditions... patients really want to work with professionals who are knowledgeable and experienced in being complete with complex conditions.  Joel Safran is that kind of professional.  Over his many years years of practice, patients have held him in high regard.  They considered him as being 'able to do more for them than any other doctor or therapist they had ever worked with'.

Treatment strategies need to be backed up with knowledge, skills and perseverance in order to find effective answers for the person in your treatment room.  In being "wholistic", thorough and complete... there is much to consider...
such as:

There are 22 Cranial Bones that have over a hundred articulations with one another.  Cranial restrictions can affect the TMJ as well as create other conditions such as Headaches, Migraines, and many others.  Bones of the CranioSacral System need to be treated completely both externally as well as internally (Intra-Orally).

Restrictions of other Bony Structures from the Head to the Hips can also have negative effects on TMJ issues as well as on other Chronic Conditions.

Soft tissues of the Head & Jaw are numerous and need to be thoroughly treated externally and Intra-Orally.  Dysfunction of these Soft Tissues give rise to numerous contributing factors relating to Headaches and Migraines... as well as relating to Ear issues such as Ringing in the Ear, Tinnitus and even Balance & Dizziness issues.

Soft tissues from the Head to the Hips need to be balanced and normalized... especially in the Lumbar & Cervical areas.  There often is a very clear relationship between Lower Back Pain and problems in the area of the Neck, Shoulders, Jaw and TMJ.

Nervous tissue needs to be freed of restrictions in the area of the Cranium and on down to the Sacrum.  Our body is a highly integrated whole, therefore treatments need to address and respect that... in a "wholistic" way.
