effective therapy is an integrative approach
based upon the understanding of integrated
relationships within our body systems.
This is one of the Osteopathic Principles that
guide the therapeutic approach of this practice.
Neuromuscular Therapy & More...
Neuromuscular Therapy is a specific treatment approach for the treatment of pain & dysfunction. By "dysfunction", we mean reduced 'range of motion'; loss of strength, agility and dexterity; the development of neurological disorders and sensations; impaired physiological functioning of body systems, and so on.
Four physiological factors are specifically examined.
Ischemia, which is an area temporarily affected by an obstructed circulation of blood. This is usually caused by increased tightness of tissues.
Trigger Points, which are areas of heightened neurological activity. They often refer pain & dysfunction to other parts of the body.
Nerve Compression or Entrapment, which can come from bone, muscle and/or fascia. Entrapment is a type of strangulation of nerves running through muscle or fascial tissues. Other tissues, like circulatory vessels, can also be Compressed and Entrapped.
Postural Distortions, are a result of restrictions and imbalances that undesirably alter our posture... and can contribute to further restrictions and imbalances in our body.
Other Factors, also have an effect on Chronic Conditions. Improper nutrition, lack or improper stretching & exercise will have negative affects on our health. How well we are able to manage our emotional well being, will also have an effect on our total well being.
During a Typical Neuromuscular Therapy Session, we will evaluate distortions in your body's present Structural Integration, and treat the specific tissues (muscle & fascia) that are contributing to pain & dysfunction. It is a very focused approach in determining and treating the root cause of contributing factors. During the therapy session, communication between you and your Neuromuscular Massage Therapist will assist in following the neurological pathway... and in treating you and your tissues appropriately. We work together to get as much accomplished as possible.
![]() Untreated, Pain & Dysfunction generally becomes WORSE...
It will generally spiral... from pain & dysfunction... to more stress & tension... to more muscle tightness... to increased restriction of blood flow... which results in an increase in metabolic waste accumulation... which creates more pain & dysfunction.
This cycle is reversed, by treating the affected areas in a thorough and complete way. Tissue sensitivity is reduced, and your ability to be more productive and enjoy life more fully is generally increased. In the process, we are treating more than Neuromuscular Structures... we are treating all the soft tissues involved. Our body is a highly integrated unit. So, to be effective, we need to be aware of that and integrate our work with the rest of the body and its tissues as well. Proper Structural Integration of you body is our goal.
The Nervous System participates in all disease processes that we know of. By elimination this Neuromuscular component of that process, we can have a profound affect on the disease process. And we can often have a profound affect on the other tissues, body systems and our total Well Being.
Neuromuscular Therapy is only one
of the Osteopathic Techniques
utilized in this practice.
