WHAT  ARE  CHRONIC  CONDITIONS...

Chronic Conditions are those having a long duration or frequent recurrences of distress & dysfunction.  It is also marked by the development of layered compensatory patterns that further weaken and stress your body.  In other words... a constantly vexing, weakening or troubling health situation.

Chronic Conditions are also associated with poor

or disappointing past treatment results...

People have gone from one doctor or therapist to another without experiencing the results they had been looking for.  When people began working with Joel Safran, well over 85% of these people experienced the improvement they had been searching for... and they understood more about their condition... and how to properly treat it.

Hope... that there is someone

'out there' who can help you...

HOW  DO  CHRONIC  CONDITIONS  DEVELOP...

The main goal of the body is to survive.  It is focused on keeping you going, no matter what.  It therefore attempts to make compensating (compromising) adjustments fro the various & created imbalances and restrictions... rather than correcting them.  the affects of these compensations then streams out from the "root cause" area, and they gradually create other layers of imbalances & restrictions that gradually create other layers of imbalance & restriction that gradually affect other parts of you body.

The process of layering one compensatory pattern upon another continues in "this gradual process"... which further adds to the increasing imbalances and restrictions... and the complexity of conditions.  Eventually, you body gets to a point where it can compensate no longer...  Too many 'band-aids' trying to hold you together is temporary at best.  You then experience an increasing level of weakness & pain... loss of function & ability... and other undesirable aspects to your health.

That is when most people become aware that they have a problem.  But, the problem really had been in the process of formation for a long time.  When you begin treatments at SafranTherapies, we will begin searching for the 'root cause'... and begin to reduce the effects of the compensatory layers.

FROM  WHERE  DO  CHRONIC  CONDITIONS  ARISE...

Over the years, old unresolved injuries from accidents, falls and other types of traumas continue to compensate in different ways.  People are different... and they process trauma differently... and it shows up differently in each of us.  that makes finding the root cause that much more difficult.  That is why it is important to work with a more experienced and trained therapist like Joel Safran.  Here are some examples of where traumas can arise.

Accidents & Injuries:

Motor Vehicles...   Occupation...   Sports & Recreation...

Objects that fall on you...  and so on.

Physiology & Medical Issues:

Various Illnesses...   Surgeries...   Broken Bones...

Genetic Weaknesses...   Visceral & CranioSacral  Restrictions...

and so on.

Emotional Issues:

Physical or Emotional Abuse (as a child or as an adult)...

Personality types...   Coping with Stress...   and so on.

Unresolved "Childhood Diseases":

Problems or accidents during pregnancy and/or birth...

Physical trauma from falls and/or accidents...

Common distortion patterns we tend to be born with:

Over time, and depending on complexity & severity, these distortion

patterns evolve into varied physical and physiological conditions

which affect us in our adult years.

Chronic Conditions are generally related to

"Soft Tissues"...  They can be treated here...

Pain & Dysfunction... Contributing Factors...

Quite often, more than one factor contributes to a person's pain, restricted motion and compromised physiology.  It is important to be thorough and complete during evaluation and treatment planning.  Here are "some" of the possible factors we look for... and treat.  They relate and integrate with one another.

Ischemia...

Restricted Blood Flow affecting nutrients to and waste products from body tissues.

Fascial Restrictions...

Fascia wraps every part of our body.  When it hardens and shortens, this will contribute to various compression problems affecting proper function and movement of all our body.

Excessive Joint Compression...

This causes pain, loss of mobility and other distructful effects.

Reduced Circulation of Fluids...

This concerns fluids other than Blood... and in tissues other than arteries & veins.

Soft tissue inflammation...

The "inflammation process" can be positive and beneficial... or it can be a reaction to problems such as Arthritis, Bursitis, Tendonitis... and other "itis" type conditions.

Trigger Points...

These are areas of high neurological activity in tissue which produce pain locally... and also refer pain & dysfunction to other parts of the body.

Neurological Complications...

Depending on the condition... Nerve functions may be affected causing people to experience Tingling, Numbness, Weakness, altered functions, Generalized pain... etc.

Somatic-Visceral Complications...

Dysfunctional MyoFascial conditions can 'spill over' and affect Organs & Gland functions.  The reverse is also possible as dysfunctional Organs can affect other Organs, Glands and the proper function of internal & external soft tissues.

NeuroVascular Entrapment & Compression...

Nerve Entrapment or Compression can be a result of...  Bone on Bone...  Bone against Myofascial Tissues...  or between layers of different MyoFascial Tissues.  In any case, this affects your ability to function well... physically, physiologically, and emotionally.

Postural Distortion...

Unbalanced anatomical postures, such as rounded shoulders, Lordosis, Scoliosis, and many others... will negatively affect body functioning physically, physiologically and emotionally.

Nutritional Deficiencies...

Poor food choices can negatively affect your body.  The body's inability to absorb & utilize nutrients can also be a result of tissue imbalances and other dysfunctions within your body.

Behavioral-Mood Swings...

Nervousness, depression, irritability and other emotional conditions often are related to soft tissue conditions.

As the cycles continue...

Conditions spread and become more complex and intense.

                             Stress Pain Cycle

Stress Drains our body of Energy & Health...

Even during a state of good health, muscles are the body's prime energy consumer.  But during a 'stressful' or a 'dysfunctional' state, there is an increased consumption of energy that actually provides less productive or effective functioning.  We are in a 'fight or flight' mode when in is not necessary for our survival.

Our digestive functions are therefor less efficient, so we absorb less nutrients from the foods we eat.  We become more easily fatigued.  We become more prone to disease and dysfunction because of this wasted energy... and it also adversely affects normal physiology and our immune responses.  This sets the stage for all sorts of restrictions, pains, weakness, emotional states and dysfunctions.

Skeletal muscle tension

is the most common cause of Pain...

It also adversely affects our Energy & Health

What is meant by "Soft Tissue"...

Everything other than BONE is "Soft Tissue"...

This includes Muscle, Fascia, Circulatory Vessels, Nerves and various other tissues in our Nervous System, Organs, Glands, all sorts of Ligaments, Discs, Cartilage, Cranial Membranes, Sutures, and more.

Fascia, the most pervasive tissue in our body, wraps and permeates every muscle group, nerve and cell in our body... from just under the Skin... to the inside of our Spine & Cranium.  When Fascia becomes shortened, thickened and dehydrated... this results in restrictions, entrapments and distorting imbalances which create various negative effects to our body's structures and functions.

Lumbar Stack Force -1

For Example... the Discs between our Spinal Vertebrae are also Soft Tissue.  When the soft tissues and space between Vertebral segments become too short or imbalanced, that alters the position of the Disc... and that contributes to Degenerative Disc Disease.   It will also cause nerves to be pinched affecting functions in our Abdomeno-Pelvic Organs and our Legs.

Parched Ground

Fascia can create similar problems as it becomes "Dehydrated"... dries out,

hardens and shortens... much like a dried out kitchen sponge or this River Bed.  When that happens, the tissues that are wrapped within this dehydrated Fascia are in a sense "strangled".  The resulting compressions & restrictions then inhibit proper functioning of the related tissues... and also create pain.

Who Benefits most from these Therapies...

The people who have been living with all sorts of Chronic Conditions... and endlessly have been going from one doctor or therapist to another without satisfaction... will benefit the most.  People with concerns such as these:

"An aging body" with diminishing abilities...

Men and women usually around 30-60 years of age, who are concerned about undesirable changes and lost abilities (physical, physiological and mental abilities)... are generally more motivated in fining ways to reverse this.

Aches & Pains...   Stiffness...   Reduced mental abilities...   Irritability...

Headaches...   Reduction in performance at work, play, etc...

Long Term (Chronic Conditions

that don't get better... or that get worse...

Quite often, this may be related to some past trauma or injury... such as:

major falls...   motor vehicle accidents...   work or home accidents...

negative effects from surgery...   sports or recreational related injuries...

(skiing, soccer, track, dance, racquet sports, home projects, etc.)

Difficulty in coping with high pressure situations...

Difficulty in handling Stress, Tension or Frustration... may be related to past soft tissue damages and imbalances.  Ongoing development of compensatory patterns further weakens your ability to cope and your body to keep fit & healthy... thus diminishing your life & well being potentials.

Ongoing Pain...  and Other Neurological effects...

Such as...   Headaches...   Pain...   Stiffness...

Weakness...   Reduced physical & mental abilities...

TMJ  Disorders...   Carpal Tunnel or Repetitive Strain Disorders...

Digestive, Abdominal, Pelvic and Bowel Disorders...  and so on.

Psychological & Emotional aspects of Pain & Dysfunction...

Often there is a relationship between the physical and the emotional aspects of a person's past and present life.  These emotional traumas and influences can translate into the development of conditions and distortions that further compromise a person's total health.

The roots of these relationships often are from a person's youth and childhood.  Thorough and sensitive soft tissue treatments can greatly enhance the progress of those choosing to, at the same time, work with a competent psychologist.

People who benefit most from these therapies...  Generally:

Have an active desire to foster their better health...

Are highly motivated in supporting the process...

Keep searching for the most promising Therapist for them...

FREQUENTLY  ASKED  QUESTIONS...

1.  Does Insurance cover treatments...

The Carolinas are quite behind other parts of North America.  By far, the most progressive State has been Florida... and only because of the strength & persistence of the Florida Massage Therapy Association in convincing the State Legislature to elevate Massage Therapists to the same level as Physical Therapists when providing similar treatments.  It is so very important for both State citizens and Massage Therapy Associations to speak out.  For many reasons, that is not happening in the Carolinas.

However, some corporate insurance plans do offer some level of compensation for Massage Therapy Treatments.  They generally want there to be more "Therapy" than just "Massage".  SafranTherapies is the type of practice that is every bit on a level (or even above) most physical therapy or chiropractic clinics.  So, find out if your company policy will cover treatments here...  Speak out if necessary.

It is nice to have insurance... but, please consider that:

Good health is the most valuable asset in your life...

Losing it will be very costly to you in numerous ways...

Responsible people choose to invest wisely in themselves...

2.  Do I need a referral from a doctor...

No you do not...  In States and Provinces that have established plans & procedures (like Florida & Ontario), a prescription and sometimes a written treatment plan is required.  In the Carolinas, there is no established system.

3.  How often do I need treatments...

That is an individual consideration that  will depend on a number of things unique to just you.  We will better be able to understand and determine that  after treatments begin.  For instance, it will depend on the number of years the condition has been developing (and compensating) in your body... how well your body responds to treatment... how well you support the therapy process... and other such considerations that will be unique to you.

At SafranTherapies, I do not believe in over-treating.  In the beginning, weekly appointments are recommended until we can get to a stage in which your body is more able to maintain positive results.  Your support in that process is very important in moving the therapy process forward.

4.  RE: uneasiness with a male therapist...

The most important consideration should always be the ability, experience and education of the doctor or therapist.  Joel Safran has been practicing for over 25 years.  His patients have been men and women of all ages.  He has also worked very well with children.

With anyone, the first session seems to be the most difficult because of the introduction to an "unknown".  This is especially so for patients dealing with Chronic Conditions.  They have been disappointed by so many other doctors and therapists before... and they often come in with a "chip on their shoulder" during their first appointment.  This "chip" quickly dissipates as the session progresses... and they experience the positive differences when working with Joel Safran.

5.  What is a typical Therapy Session like...

From the very first session... the focus will be on you and the uniqueness of your body's relationship to your condition.  It begins with a thorough Patient Health History intake form that assists me in asking more fruitful questions... and guides me in better understanding what is going on in your body.  Then we will look at your standing posture so as to evaluate its twists & turn.

When on the treatment table, you will be covered at all times.  Only the part of your body being treated will be uncovered.  the goal is for you to feel comfortable with the evaluation & treatment process at all times.  I will tell you what I am doing and why so as to help you understand more about you body, the conditions and the process.  It is important and more effective if you feel that "we" are working together for "your" benefit.

Treatment sessions are longer than those with other doctors or therapists.  The body needs to process therapy at the rate that "it" chooses.  We must work with the body... and follow what it tells us.  The website indicates that sessions last 90 minutes.  However, if I need more time in order to be complete, I will use it.  You will not be charged for the additional time that is necessary for the session to be complete.  That is the way I work with patients.

When you compare the total time that is put into your Therapy Treatment Session, you will realize that it compares to about the cost for just a massage.  Treatments at SafranTherapies are a very good value for your time & money.  I only want to work with patients who will value and appreciate that... and who will support the treatment plan.  For over 25 years, it has been a very enjoyable and positive experience for both me and patients.

6.  RE: possible discomfort during or after treatments...

Everyone is different... and because of that, they may respond differently to the same techniques, pressures or whatever.  That is why it is important for the patient to communicate with me during the treatment session.  We will go over the communication process as we begin the treatment.

Sometimes an area may be particularly "tender".  Most of the time this same area will not be nearly as "tender" when treated again the second time.  This is because we have encouraged waste products to exit the tissue.  Waste products irritate Nerve endings.  We feel that as "pain".  As the waste products are flushed out, and tissue quality is restored, tenderness decreases.

In a very few instances, a person might have a heightened sense of discomfort (usually referral type pain) the next day.  That possibly may have resulted from an inflammation type response in that person that would not have occurred in most other people.  That too is something that most probably would reoccur less and less from session to session.  And it probably might not occur at all in the second session.  It is part of the healing process that particular bodies go through.  We need to work with it... and follow what the body shows us... and not be afraid of the healing process.

No one (to my knowledge) has ever been hurt by the type of soft tissue therapies provided by this practice.  No one has ever died.  On the other hand, we all know of the instances where people have died from treatments provided by Medical Doctors and Chiropractors.  So, please know that one of the safest places you could possibly be is here at SafranTherapies.
